چکیده
Background: The purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate the studies that assessed the association between obesity and lung functions in obese adult individuals.
Method: This study is a systematic review. Different databases including PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, EMBASE, ProQuest, and Google Scholar were searched up to 30 June 2021. The keywords used were: “obesity”, “overweight”, “breathing function”, “respiratory function”, “breathing physiology”, and “breathing disorders”. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were conducted by two independent reviewers.
Result: sixteen articles were eligible to be included in this review.  8 articles were cohort, 4 articles were case-control and 4 articles were cross-sectional studies.
Conclusion: Based on Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) quality assessment tools, all of the included studies were assessed as high quality except one of the cohort studies (approximately 6% of all included studies) was assessed as a moderate quality level.  According to the results of these 16 reviewed articles, there is a strong inverse correlation between the amount of obesity and some lung volumes and capacities in adult individuals.
