Background: This study aimed to evaluate phase III of physical therapy management, which is late rehabilitation phase based on the patient's specific goals and athletic demands, to increase muscle strength, knee functions, psychological readiness following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Case Presentation: A patient underwent ACLR using a hamstring tendon graft with lateral meniscus repair on November 7, 2022. Thirteen weeks after surgery, the patient represented the poor muscle strength (< 10 mmHg vs. uninjured leg), knee function (< 80 of Lysholm's score), and psychological readiness (< 70 of ACL return to sport index (ACL-RSI) score). The patient received 5 times the standard physical therapy interventions from February 6, 2023, to February 15, 2023. The leg circumferences, muscle strengths and knee functions in both legs were measured before and after interventions for the baseline and follow-up measurements. There were increases in leg circumferences, respectively, by 0.2cm, 1cm, and 0.5cm on the 20cm, 10cm, and 5cm above the center of the patella (COP) and by 1cm below COP. The strengths of the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles were improved by 12 mmHg, 15 mmHg, and 25 mmHg. In addition, there were score improvements in knee functions by 27 points of Lysholm's score and 32 points of ACL-RSI. Conclusion: The case study found that phase III of physical therapy interventions on an ACLR patient effectively improved leg circumferences, muscle strengths, knee functions, and psychological readiness. The physical therapy protocols of this study case can be used for reference to treat post-ACLR patients. | ||
