A Systematic Review of the Factors Influencing Infant Bonding and Attachment Following NICU Hospitalization

چکیده
Background: This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesize factors influencing bonding and attachment in infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Methods: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was performed between February 21 and March 17, 2024, using the Cochrane Library, PsycNet, PubMed, and Scopus databases. A total of 19 studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the final analysis.
Results: The findings indicated that several factors either directly predicted or were significantly associated with the development of bonding and attachment in infants following NICU hospitalization. Specifically, the included studies identified the influence of demographic (4 studies), psychological (7 studies), cognitive (2 studies), and physiological (2 studies) factors. In addition, skin-to-skin contact (2 studies) and maternal–infant attachment styles (6 studies) were identified as important contributors to the bonding process in this population.
Conclusion: The findings of this review suggest that infant and parental demographic characteristics, as well as psychological, cognitive, and physiological factors, play important roles in the development of bonding and attachment. Furthermore, skin-to-skin contact and maternal–infant attachment styles appear to be key factors influencing attachment outcomes among infants with a history of NICU hospitalization.
