چکیده | ||
Introduction: Traditional medical education faces ongoing challenges in fully replicating real-world clinical experiences and achieving learning objectives. Digital twins (DTs) have emerged as an innovative simulation tool but require further investigation in educational applications. This letter discusses the potential role of digital twins in medical education, particularly for teaching surgical procedures, as well as associated opportunities and limitations. Methods: A literature review was conducted regarding the uses of simulation in healthcare professional training and the capabilities of digital twin technologies. Published perspectives on the challenges of current simulation methods and integrated virtual platforms were also examined. Results: Digital twins allow more accurate representation of individual patient anatomies, facilitate multi-iteration practice of technical skills, and enable prevention-focused evaluative training models. However, integration of real-world data into simulations remains difficult as does ensuring connectivity, privacy, and specialized support requirements. Cost-related access issues and a lack of large-scale educational outcome studies were also noted. Conclusion: While digital twins may advance simulation-based learning, further applied research is still needed. Sustainable implementation depends on addressing technical, financial, and ethical challenges to realize their full benefits. If these hurdles can be overcome through collaborative innovation, digital twins show promise for revolutionizing medical education and optimizing clinical competence, treatment selection, and patient safety. | ||
